Clean the steering gear in the boot area.
While holding the tie rod end 2 from turning, loosen the lock nut 3 (pic. 5.28).
Remove the front wheel.
Loosen the tie rod end nut a few turns, but do not remove it.
To protect the threads, leave the nut threaded onto the top few threads of the pin.
Using a ball joint remover, press the tie rod end out of the steering knuckle. Now you can unscrew the nut.

Remove the spring clip (Pos. 1 in fig. 5.28 with pliers for installing clamps from the corrugated boot and slide it towards the steering rod.
Remove the clamp and pull the boot off the steering gear housing.

Using nozzle SW 38 (open end wrench) unscrew the steering rod from the rack (pic. 5.33).
Note: If there are visible signs of corrosion, damage, wear or contamination of the toothed rack, the steering gear is replaced as an assembly.
Note: If there is no visible film of lubrication on the rack, the steering gear is also replaced as an assembly.
