Removing
Four cylinder engine
The thermostat is located in the water pump housing. On 1.6-I engines with code AHL, the thermostat is attached to the cooling system pipe, on the side of the engine block.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
Engines other than 1.6-I AHL engine
Location of the thermostat on four-cylinder engines, except for the 1.6-I AHL engine
- 1 - thermostat,
- 2 - sealing ring,
- 3 - branch pipe,
- 4 - bolts
1. Remove the two bolts securing the coolant hose to the bottom of the water pump and drain the coolant into a suitable container. Move a branch pipe of system of cooling with the hose connected to it aside, see fig. The location of the thermostat on four-cylinder engines, except for the 1.6-I AHL engine.
2. Remove thermostat and o-ring. When installing the thermostat, a new O-ring must be used.
Engines 1.6-I AHL
Engine thermostat 1.6-I AHL
- 1 - bolt,
- 2 - branch pipe,
- 3 - sealing ring,
- 4 - thermostat
1. Unscrew two bolts and remove a connecting branch pipe from the block of cylinders of the engine.
2. Remove the thermostat together with the O-ring. At installation it is necessary to use a new sealing ring, see fig. Engine thermostat 1.6-I AHL.
Checking the functionality of the thermostat
Thermostat operating positions
- a - the thermostat is closed,
- b - thermostat open
Checking the performance of the thermostat by heating it in a vessel with water
1. Measure length (A) closed thermostat, see fig. Operating positions of the thermostat.
2. A rough test of the thermostat's performance can be done by hanging it on a thread in a glass vessel filled with water and heating the water to a boil (see fig. Checking the performance of the thermostat by heating it in a vessel with water). When the water boils, the thermostat should open. Otherwise, replace it.
The thermostat opening temperature is marked on the thermostat housing.
When the thermostat is heated to the boiling point of water, the length of the open thermostat (b) must be greater than the length of the closed thermostat (A) by 7 mm (see fig. Thermostat operating positions).
A thermostat that does not close when the water cools should also be replaced.
Installation
1. Install the thermostat with a new O-ring. Install the cooling system pipe and fix it with bolts, tightening them with a force of 10 Nm.
2. Pour coolant into the cooling system.
3. Start the engine and check the cooling system for leaks.
Five-cylinder engine
The thermostat is located in a separate housing, which is mounted on the front side of the cylinder head (see fig. Engine cylinder head assembly 2.3-I-VR5).
The thermostat must be installed in such a way that the air vent is directed upwards.
Data for checking the operation of the thermostat
The temperature at which the thermostat starts to open is +87°C.
Full opening temperature of the thermostat +105°С.
The length of the thermostat valve stroke is at least 7 mm.
Six-cylinder engine
Removing the connecting pipe of the cooling system from the front of the cylinder head
- 1 - bolt,
- 2 - connecting pipe,
- 3 - sealing ring,
- 4 - thermostat
The thermostat is located in the connecting pipe installed on the engine block.
1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.
2. Remove poly V-belt.
3. Loosen the toothed belt tension and remove the toothed belt from the camshaft pulley.
Warning: To protect the toothed belt from coolant, cover the toothed belt with polyethylene.
4. Unscrew two bolts and remove a connecting branch pipe of system of cooling from a forward part of a head of the block of cylinders, see fig. Removing the cooling system connecting pipe from the front of the cylinder head.
5. Remove the O-ring and thermostat from the cylinder head.
6. Check the functionality of the thermostat.
Installation
Correct location of the thermostat on six-cylinder engines
The arrow indicates the valve for removing air.
1. Install the thermostat in the cylinder head so that the bleed valve is at the top, see fig. Correct location of the thermostat on six-cylinder engines.
2. Install the cooling system connecting pipe with a new sealing ring and screw in the bolts, tightening them with a torque of 10 Nm.
3. Install the toothed belt onto the camshaft pulley.
4. Pour coolant into the cooling system.
5. Start the engine and check the cooling system for leaks.
