Dimensions of cold and hot thermostat

Removal
Attention! The designations of the parts refer to the cooling systems of a 4-cylinder engine. Removal and installation from a 5-cylinder engine is carried out similarly.
1. Place a suitable container under the coolant connection pipe.
2. Unscrew the bolts (4) of the coolant thermostat connecting pipe (21) (see fig. Water pump, coolant thermostat, oil cooler of 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines).
3. Remove the sealing ring (7).
4. Remove the thermostat (21).
Examination
1. Measure the dimension "a" on the thermostat (see fig. Dimensions of cold and heated thermostat).
2. Warm up the thermostat in a water bath. The thermostat should not touch the walls of the vessel.

3. Monitor the temperature with a thermometer. The thermostat starts to open at about 87°C, and ends at about 102°C.
4. After heating the thermostat to approximately 100°C, dimension "b" should exceed dimension "a" by at least 7 mm.
Installation
1. Replace the sealing ring, install the thermostat and screw on the cover, fill with coolant.
2. Let the engine run until the thermostat opens. Check the cap and coolant hose for leaks.
