Note. When disassembling, put marks on the removed parts suitable for further use in order to install them in their original places and in their original position during assembly.
Remove engine. Install the washed and cleaned engine on a stand for disassembly. Remove oil filter. Remove cylinder head cover, intake manifold. exhaust manifold and turbocharger (depending on configuration). Remove the cylinder head as shown below. Remove oil sump.
Remove clutch cover assembly with pressure plate. Remove pistons with connecting rods. For this:
- fix the cylinder block on the stand;
- apply alignment marks to the connecting rods, connecting rod caps and corresponding cylinders;
- unscrew the bolts of the connecting rod caps;
- make sure that there are alignment marks on the outer surface of the connecting rods and connecting rod caps;
- remove the pistons with connecting rods from the cylinders.
Remove the connecting rod bearing shells and check for wear as indicated below. If the earbuds are suitable for further use, mark the position on them («top», «bottom») and mark the corresponding connecting rods. Using pliers, remove the piston pin circlip and use a drift to push the pin out of the upper head of the connecting rod. Loosen the bolts securing the crankshaft oil seal holders and remove the holders together with the oil seals using two screwdrivers inserted into the two protrusions intended for this. Before removing the main bearing caps, check the axial movement of the crankshaft, which must correspond to the values specified in subsection «Crankshaft and flywheel». Unscrew the bolts securing the main bearing caps and remove the caps together with the lower shells. Remove the crankshaft and upper bearing shells from the bearing seats. The main bearing caps are numbered from 1 to 5, indicating the order in which they are installed when assembling the engine. If the main bearing shells are to be reused, mark them with match marks as specified for the conrod bearing shells, marking the appropriate main bearing caps. Remove the intermediate shaft thrust bearing together with the oil seal and remove the intermediate shaft.
