Removal and installation the engine (VW Passat B4)

To remove, disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the hood. Drain the oil from the engine. Open the cap of the expansion tank of the cooling system.

Disconnect the radiator hoses and drain the coolant. Disconnect the electric fan connector and remove the radiator. Remove the clutch slave cylinder without disconnecting the hydraulic line, or disconnect the clutch cable (depending on the configuration). Remove the air filter and power steering pump (depending on the configuration). Disconnect the fuel injection pump control drive cables. Disconnect the cooling system and interior heater hoses from the engine, and disconnect the connectors of the electrical equipment units installed on the engine.

Secure the power unit.

Loosen the rear engine mount bracket fastening nut. Loosen the gearbox mount bracket nut. Remove the front engine mount bracket. Disconnect the wires from the starter and remove the starter. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold. Remove the power unit by lifting it from the engine compartment. Disconnect the gearbox from the engine.

To install, assemble the gearbox with the engine. Install the engine mount brackets, remove the support from under the gearbox. Install the starter and connect the wires to it. Install the front engine mount bracket. Tighten the mounting nuts of the other engine mount brackets. Depending on the configuration, install the clutch slave cylinder or connect the clutch drive cable.

Install, depending on the configuration, the power steering pump. Connect the electrical connectors. Attach the fuel injection pump control drive cables. Install the radiator. Connect the cooling system and interior heater hoses. Fill the cooling system with liquid.

Depending on the configuration, connect the oil cooler hoses. Install the air filter. Connect the wire to the negative terminal of the battery. Fill the engine with oil, check the coolant level and, if necessary, bring it up to standard. Install the hood, start the engine and check its operation.
