Diesel engines. General information (VW Passat B4)

Four-stroke, four-cylinder, in-line diesel engine with transverse arrangement inclined to the right. Diesels "1Y", "RA", "SB", "AA2", pre-chamber engines "1Z" with undivided combustion chamber (with direct fuel injection). All engines except the "1Y" model are turbocharged. The "AAZ" engine is a turbocharged modification of the "1Y" engine.

Since January 1996, the AFN engine with a single combustion chamber has been installed (with direct fuel injection), with variable geometry turbocharger, air-to-air cooler, exhaust gas recirculation system and catalytic converter of exhaust gases. The "AFN" engine is identical in design to the diesel model "1Z".
