4-cylinder engine
Removal
Vehicles with power steering: remove the V-belt, tilt the power steering impeller pump forward, see chapter "Steering".

Place a suitable container under the coolant pump.
Unscrew the thermostat flange fastening "2" and drain the coolant into a container.
Remove the thermostat.
Examination
Measure dimension "a" at the thermostat, see Figure 19-003.

Due to the high boiling point, heat the thermostat in a coolant bath. The thermostat should not touch the walls of the container.
Control the temperature with a thermometer. The thermostat valve starts to open at approximately +85°C, and ends at approximately +105°C.

[The original information is posted on the website: www.VWManual.ru]
After heating the thermostat to 105°C, dimension "b" must be at least 7 mm larger than dimension "a".
Installation
Replace the sealing ring, insert the thermostat and screw on the cover, fill with coolant.
If removed, install the power steering pump drive V-belt.
Start the engine and let it run until the thermostat valve opens. Check the cover gasket and coolant hose for leaks.
