Note: No temperature checks can be performed on the 1.2/1.4 litre petrol engine, except for the FSI engine. You can only check whether the thermocouple pin extends when heated.
Remove the thermostat, see the relevant chapter above.
Measure and record the thermostat dimension "a", see Figure SX-1802.

Heat the thermostat in a bath of water. The thermostat should not touch the walls of the bath.
Monitor the temperature with a thermometer.
Engine 1.4-I-PD-TDI:
- start of opening of thermostat valve: approximately +85°C;
- end of opening of thermostat valve: approximately +105°C;
1.9L SDI engine:
- thermostat valve opening start: approx. +86°C;
- end of opening data of thermostat valve: none.

After heating the thermostat to a temperature of approximately +100°C, dimension "b" should be approximately 7 mm larger than dimension "a". The full stroke of the thermostat valve should be at least 7 mm.
