Replacement of the contact group of the breaker (contact ignition system) (VW Golf 2)

Over time, carbon deposits appear on the breaker contacts, noticeable by small pits and protrusions. In addition, the plastic part wears out, which leads to a decrease in the distance between the contacts. The consequence is a weakening of the ignition spark. Therefore, the breaker contacts must be replaced no less often than after 15,000 km.

Removal

Remove the distributor cap. Remove the distributor rotor and sealing washer.

Disconnect the breaker contact wire and unscrew the screw, remove the contact group.

Installation

Lubricate the breaker contact support with a drop of oil.

Insert the breaker contact group. Lubricate the working surface of the cam and the plastic part with universal grease. When installing the breaker contact group, the journal of the support pin should snap into place.

Attention! Make sure that when installing the journal on the lower part of the contact group, it snaps into place in the opening of the carrier plate.

Carefully remove any oil or grease that has gotten onto the contact surfaces. The contact surfaces should be mutually parallel.

Connect the wire to the breaker contacts.

Adjust the angle of the closed state of contacts (ACC).

Place the sealing washer, rotor and cover on the distributor.

Clean the distributor cap before installation, pay attention to cracks, traces of leakage currents (black channels) and replace the cover if necessary.

Pay attention to the correct installation and condition of the carbon contact, put on the distributor cap.

Adjust the ignition timing.
