The conventional ignition system is contact controlled. To do this, the ignition distributor has a contact pair - a breaker.
The breaker in the ignition distributor is designed to induce ignition voltage. When the contacts in the ignition coil are open, a high voltage pulse is generated, which is fed through the ignition distributor to the corresponding spark plug.
When the contacts open between the contact surfaces, a slight spark occurs, which destroys the breaker contacts over time. Burning of the contacts is reduced by a capacitor mounted on the outside of the ignition distributor.
As part of the maintenance of the contact ignition system, the breaker contacts must be adjusted or replaced.
