Timing gear drive pulleys are provided with alignment marks. The position of the pulley mounted on the crankshaft should be related to the notch mark • on the V-belt pulley in front of the toothed pulley. To correctly align the alignment marks, perform the following operations before installing the toothed belt:
Turn the camshaft so that the mark «A» on the outside of the toothed pulley was in line with the protrusion shown in fig. 93. Turn the camshaft very slowly.
After marking, check on the valves of the first cylinder whether the piston is at TDC on the compression stroke. Both valves of the first cylinder must be closed.
In this position, carefully lay the toothed belt on the toothed pulleys of the camshaft, crankshaft and fluid pump shaft, preventing the pulleys from turning on the shafts, then tighten the belt.
Turn the crankshaft several times and make sure that both marks match when the No. 1 cylinder is again at TDC on the compression stroke. Turn the crankshaft so that the notch on the pulley is in the middle of the plate located above the pulley. The plate has a protrusion with the symbol «ABOUT» (corresponding TDC). The left ledge is used to set the ignition timing. The crankshaft can be turned with a special key for the bolts of the toothed pulley.
