Pic. 386. Single-shaft steering column, July 1984 issue
Before replacing the column, remember that only a new type of steering column is substituted for spare parts (telescopic). This means that the lower shaft bearing will also have to be replaced, since the old bearing does not fit the new column.
Before installing the steering column, it is necessary to assemble the slip ring, combination switch, ignition lock housing, spring and gaskets as follows:
- A) Carefully fix the lower part of the column in a vise so that the upper part rests against the jaws of the vise and both halves cannot move mutually. Small pin at the bottom (arrow in fig. 386), must be visible in the opening of the upper part, if necessary, move both parts apart as far as they will go.
- b) Insert the column from the side of the neck of the steering wheel into the tubular casing according to the mark.
- V) Attach the column to the cardan joint, tighten the nuts with a torque of 30 Nm.
- G) Attach the ignition lock housing to the tubular casing.
