Figure 386. Single-shaft steering column, July 1984 production.
Before replacing the column, remember that only a new type of steering column is included in the spare parts (telescopic). This means that the lower shaft bearing will also have to be replaced, since the old bearing does not fit the new column.
Before installing the steering column, the contact ring, combination switch, ignition switch housing, spring and gaskets must be assembled as follows:
- a) Carefully secure the lower part of the column in a vice so that the upper part rests against the jaws of the vice and the two halves cannot move relative to each other. The small pin located at the bottom (arrow in figure 386), should be visible in the hole in the upper part, if necessary, move both parts apart until they stop.
- b) Insert the column from the steering wheel neck side into the tubular casing according to the mark.
- c) Attach the column to the cardan joint, tighten the nuts to a torque of 30 Nm.
- d) Attach the ignition switch housing to the tubular casing.
