Replacing the fuel filter
It is important that the fuel filter be replaced by a Volkswagen dealer or a qualified mechanic.
Fuel filter water separator
The presence of water in the fuel system of a diesel engine leads to engine malfunction. For this reason, a water separator is installed in the Volkswagen engine fuel system. The drain valve of the water separator is installed under the car in front of the right rear wheel.
The accumulated water must be drained regularly in accordance with the maintenance schedule. If the glow plug indicator light starts to flash, this indicates that a large amount of water has accumulated in the water separator. In this case, contact your Volkswagen dealer or the nearest service station immediately to have the water drained.
After draining the water, drive a few kilometers. If the glow plug indicator light still flashes, this means that water has accumulated in the fuel tank and can be removed through the water separator drain valve.
In an emergency, you can drain the accumulated water yourself. To do this:
- Move the car to a safe place away from the roadway, placing it on a level surface.
- Remove the plastic waste bag from the trunk and open the hose valve (indicated by the arrow) and connect the hose to the drain fitting of the water separator.
- Make sure the hose is not kinked and the waste bag is lying flat on the ground.
- Turn the water separator drain valve counterclockwise (at maximum turnover) until water starts to flow into the bag. If water does not flow, gently push apart the walls of the plastic bag.
- Once diesel fuel starts flowing into the hose, close the drain valve.
- Close the hose valve and disconnect the hose from the drain fitting.
If a large amount of water has been drained from the fuel tank, it is likely that water has also entered the rest of the fuel system. In this case, contact your nearest Volkswagen dealer for assistance.
Never discharge diesel fuel onto the ground, into open water or wastewater.
