Protecting your car from corrosion (VW Golf 2)

The engine compartment, as well as the engine, transmission, front and rear axle assemblies, are treated at the factory with a paraffin-based product for anti-corrosion protection. However, it is recommended that the condition of the protective coating of the engine compartment and underbody be visually inspected twice a year, preferably before and after the winter season. If restoration work is required, contact your dealer as soon as possible.

Caution: Do not apply additional primer or anti-corrosion coating on or near the exhaust manifold, tailpipes, catalytic converter or heat shields. When the vehicle is in motion, the primer material may overheat and cause a fire.

Engine bay

When it is necessary to clean the engine bay with steam or water, the protective paraffin coating is usually also removed. Therefore, it is very important to restore this protective coating on all panels, flanges, cavities and assembly surfaces of the engine. To wash the engine bay, use only industrial grease solvents designed specifically for this purpose.

Carefully follow all solvent manufacturer's instructions for use on the container.

Caution: Never use gasoline, diesel fuel or solvents, which may damage rubber parts or painted surfaces and cause a fire.

Chassis

The lower body panel of a Volkswagen car is reliably protected against corrosion. Any damage to the primer layer as a result of unexpected road accidents must be repaired immediately. Oil-based protective coatings must not be used, only resin-based or paraffin-based anti-corrosion protective agents compatible with the primer layer applied by the manufacturer. Before applying the above-mentioned protective agent, road dirt, salt spray particles and oil must be removed from the surface to be treated.



After repairing the lower body, axle, transmission or engine assemblies, it is imperative to restore damaged areas of the anti-corrosion coating.

Sealing of car body cavities

All body cavities that may be subject to corrosion are carefully treated with protective agents at the manufacturer's plant.

This type of sealing coating does not require inspection or additional treatment. In case of paraffin leakage from the cavity at high ambient temperatures, it can be removed with a plastic scraper using an appropriate solvent.

When using gasoline to remove wax with an open flame, do not smoke, etc. Do not pour gasoline onto the ground, into open water or into wastewater. Follow all safety precautions and environmental protection regulations.
