Fastening of the front exhaust pipe for models after August 1979 1 and 2 - spring clips; 3 - sealing ring
Models built prior to July 1979 have the exhaust pipe attached to the elbow along with the bolted seal.
Models built after August 1979 use high tension spring clamps instead of the threaded connection between the exhaust elbow and the front exhaust pipe. These springs are not easy to budge, they cannot be reused. Firm "Volkswagen" for removal offers a special tool with N3049 A. The figure shows how to use it.
Spacer shoes (2) special tool 3049 A (1) are installed in the holes of the spring clamp (3). On the left is a lever that rotates. The springs can now be unclenched so that they can be installed in the fixing eyes of the exhaust pipe elbow and at the front exhaust pipe
Raise the car. Allow the exhaust system to cool.
For models built before July 1979: Remove the gearbox bracket bolt.
Loosen the 6 self-locking nuts at the joint leading to the elbow.
Loosen the screws near the clamp located between the bellows and the twin tube. For models manufactured after August 1979: Install tool to spring clip holes.
Turn the knurled screws until the tool is firmly seated.
Install the extension and turn the fixture until it stops.
Remove the springs from the fixing holes in the exhaust pipe bend and the exhaust pipe: To do this, press the exhaust pipe in the direction of the springs.
Loosen the bolts at the connecting clip between the front exhaust pipe and the first muffler.
For models of all editions: remove the fixing lugs of the exhaust system.
Take out the exhaust pipe, remove the connecting clip.
Pre-July 1979 Models: Flange Seal is new when reassembled.
For models after August 1979: during assembly, the springs are first installed in the fixing holes of the exhaust pipe elbow.
The sealing ring located between the elbow and the exhaust pipe should only be replaced when it is damaged or leaking.
