Removal the front exhaust pipe (VW Golf 1)

There are two types of front exhaust pipe mounting.



On models produced before July 1979, the exhaust pipe is connected to the elbow with a seal using bolts.

Models built after August 1979 use spring clips installed under high tension instead of a threaded connection between the exhaust elbow and the front exhaust pipe. These springs are not easy to move and cannot be reused. Volkswagen offers a special tool for removal with N3049 A. The figure shows how to use it.





Raise the car. Allow the exhaust system to cool down.

For models produced before July 1979: Remove the transmission bracket bolt.

Remove the 6 self-locking nuts at the connection leading to the elbow.

Loosen the bolts near the clamp located between the bellows and the double pipe. For models produced after August 1979: install the tool to the holes of the spring clamps.

Turn the knurled screws until the fixture is securely installed.

Install the extension and turn the device until it stops.

Remove the springs from the retaining holes of the exhaust pipe elbow and the exhaust pipe: to do this, press the exhaust pipe in the direction of the springs.

Loosen the bolts at the connecting clamp between the front exhaust pipe and the first muffler.

For all models: remove the exhaust system retaining lugs.

Remove the exhaust pipe and remove the connecting clamp.

For models produced before July 1979: a new flange joint seal is installed during assembly.

For models produced after August 1979: During assembly, the springs are first installed in the retaining holes of the exhaust pipe elbow.

The sealing ring located between the elbow and the exhaust pipe should only be replaced if it is damaged or leaking.
