Thermostat — design description (VW Golf 1)

In simple terms, the thermostat determines whether the water in the radiator should be cooled or not. It therefore determines in which direction the coolant should circulate: in the "small" or in the "large" circulation circuit. (See also the section "How cooling works.") The thermostat directs the flow of coolant depending on the temperature of the coolant. This is done by means of a sleeve filled with a special compound and a valve. When the coolant heats up, the compound softens. It expands and opens the valve. When the coolant temperature rises, the thermostat directs the flow of liquid into the radiator. If, on the contrary, the temperature drops, the spring presses the valve in the "Zu" (locking) direction, the flow of liquid is directed in the small circle until the operating temperature is established again.

Note. If the engine temperature increases on the road due to a damaged thermostat, the only solution is to tow or remove the thermostat right there. on the spot. If you decide to remove it, first wait until the coolant temperature drops. You will need a container to collect the coolant.
