The starter in a Volkswagen has a sliding anchor and an overrunning clutch. When the ignition key is turned to the "Start" position, the following occurs:
Terminal 50 at the ignition switch supplies voltage to the relay located above the starter.
Due to this, the starting lever moves the starter gear along the thread of the armature shaft to the toothed ring of the engine flywheel.
When the gear engages with the flywheel, the relay switches on the starter: thus, the starter starts the engine only after the gear engages.
The starter is shown disassembled: 1 - starter relay; 2 - starting lever; 3 - starter winding; 4 - anchor; 5 - brush holder (6); 7 - overrunning clutch.
