Starter in a car "Volkswagen" has a movable anchor and overrunning clutch. When the ignition key is turned to position "Start" the following happens:
Terminal 50 at the ignition switch supplies voltage to the relay located above the starter.
Due to this, the starting lever moves the starter gear along the armature shaft threads to the engine flywheel ring gear.
When the gear meshes with the flywheel, the relay turns on the starter: thus, the starter will start the engine only after the gear has engaged.
Disassembled starter shown: 1 - starter relay; 2 - starting lever; 3 - starter winding; 4 - anchor; 5 - brush holder (6); 7 - overrunning clutch.
