Description of the starter design (VW Golf 1)

The starter is a small electric motor that, together with the charged battery, starts the engine when the ignition key is turned. It does this work with a power of about 2 hp (1.5 kW)

The starter in a Volkswagen has a sliding anchor and an overrunning clutch. When the ignition key is turned to the "Start" position, the following occurs:

Terminal 50 at the ignition switch supplies voltage to the relay located above the starter.

Due to this, the starting lever moves the starter gear along the thread of the armature shaft to the toothed ring of the engine flywheel.

When the gear engages with the flywheel, the relay switches on the starter: thus, the starter starts the engine only after the gear engages.
