Inside the incense pipe, which protrudes into the vortex chamber, is a spiral thread.
This helical thread is pressed into an insulating powder. The filament should heat the glow tube to a temperature of 800-900°C during pre-glow. Only at this temperature will a cold diesel engine be started. After starting, the spark plug must withstand operating temperatures of up to 600-900°C. It is not surprising that glow plugs can fail due to such temperatures. Still, the plugs should provide 10,000 engine starts, but often the plug fails earlier.
Sometimes it happens that the tips of glow plugs burn. Then the candle stems look like "bitten". In most cases, such burning of glow plugs appears due to injector malfunctions. In this case, it is necessary to check how flawlessly the latter work. Replace injectors if necessary
Choosing the right type of glow plugs
Glow plugs differ from each other depending on whether the glow system is installed: normal or fast.
In engines with a volume of 1.5 liters, designed before July 1980, candles with a glow duration of about 25 seconds are installed. The relevant brand names are:
- I take 162 MJ;
- Bosch 0250200052.
The fast glow system, installed since August 1980, uses plugs with a pre-glow time of about 7 seconds. They have the following designations:
- I take 601 MJ;
- Bosch N 0250201015.
Instruction. If any of the diesel drivers "Golf" with a 1.5 liter engine suffers from the fact that the engine is silent during a cold start in the morning, you can install a quick glow system, as in a diesel engine with a volume of 1.6 liters. However, the car must be no older than July 1977. In the older model, a different electrical circuit was used, which will not allow replacing the incandescent system. For a faster diesel engine start, buy 4 quick starter plugs from a VW warehouse or auto shop. You should also buy suitable pre-glow relays. For example, there is "diesel quick start kit" firms "I take".
Replacing glow plugs
Remove busbars and wire (at the left candle, if you look in the direction of movement).
Unscrew the glow plugs with an open wrench or flat wrench SW 12. To do this, remove the fuel lines behind the high-pressure fuel pump.
When installing, tighten glow plugs to 30 Nm.
glow plug (4) twisted out of its hole (1), located in the cylinder head. To do this, unscrew the contact bus (3) and near the leftmost candle (looking in the direction of travel) also wire (2).
