Steering column switch — removal and installation (VW Golf 1)

Although the steering column switches are often used, there are few problems with them. It is important to know that there is also a switch in the windshield wiper switch. If there is a defect in the photo relay and the turn signal and headlight switch, the windshield wiper switch must be replaced as a set: you cannot replace the light switch alone. To find faults in the switches, it is enough to remove the steering column trim. The trim is attached with two Phillips-head screws.

An indication. As the car ages, it may happen that the light switch gets stuck. Before changing the lever switch in the kit, you should try to ensure that the switch part is easy to move again by applying a file or silicone paste.

Removal the steering column switch

Remove the steering wheel (see chapter "Steering").

Remove the steering column trim.

Remove the three slotted screws in the combination switch, see picture





Remove the multi-pin plug from the switches.

Pull out the left switch and slightly place it on its side so that its protrusion disengages from the other switch, which is intended for the photo relay and light signal.

Remove the windshield wiper switch.

The combination switch can be removed as part of the kit.

When installing, it is necessary to maintain a gap of 2-4 mm between the combination lever switch and the steering wheel.

Rotary switch

There is a corresponding rotary switch for the fan. Everything about the fan and its switch can be found in the next chapter "Heating and ventilation". In the meantime, we'll take care of another rotary switch.
