The transparent red button in the hazard warning light switch is dimly lit when the lights are not on. Only when the flashing indicator switch is pressed is the resistance of the light bulb shunted and it glows brightly in time with the flashing indicators.

The indicator lights in the rear window heating and fog light switches only light when the corresponding switch is pressed. But the indicator light cannot provide information about whether the corresponding consumer is working or not.
Note: The switch symbol lighting device and the control devices in the switches have bulbs with glass bases and separate sockets; they can be changed.
Removal the key switch
To remove the switch located on the right, simply remove the storage box or radio.
Remove the instrument panel frame by hand.
For Golf models produced before July 1980: On the rear side of the switch, squeeze the retaining clips, pull the switch out towards the engine compartment and remove the plug.
For Golf models produced after August 1980 and Jetta: Pull the switch out towards the interior of the car. If necessary, squeeze the switch retaining clips.
Remove the multi-pin connector from the back of the switch.
Removing the light switch will take a little longer.
For Golf models produced before July 1980: remove the lower left instrument panel trim, see the chapter "Car interior".
Pull up and release the retaining clips as described.
For Golf models produced after August 1980 and Jetta: remove the instrument panel frame, see chapter "Instruments", section "Removing the instrument panel".
Remove the switch from the frame.
Replacing the switch bulb
Remove the switch.
Turn the bulb socket sleeve on the back of the switch slightly to the left and remove it.
