Replacement
The camshaft seal can be replaced without removing the camshaft and cylinder head.
1. Remove the timing belt as described earlier. Loosen the sprocket mounting bolt and remove the sprocket from the camshaft.
2. Remove the oil seal from its seat in the cylinder head using a special VW puller (figure B:3) or two self-tapping screws and pliers (see chapter "Basic rules for carrying out work")
3. Make sure the oil seal seat in the cylinder head is clean and undamaged. Lubricate the seat and the camshaft journal.
4. Install the new oil seal into the cylinder head. To avoid damaging the edges of the oil seal on the sharp edges of the camshaft keyway, use a special protective sleeve (figure B:4) or wrap the camshaft tail with several layers of electrical tape. Press the seal completely into the socket. Install the seal evenly, without distortion, using a special mandrel (figure B:5) or a socket wrench (head) of the appropriate size. Place washers between the bolt head and the mandrel.
5. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
