Tools and equipment (VW Golf 1)

All fasteners on the engine are metric in size. The bolt heads can be either regular or Allen, so you will need a set of regular wrenches to loosen them (open-end, socket and end wrenches) and Allen keys (the so-called Allen keys) — see chapter "Basic rules for carrying out work".

In addition, some operations require a number of special tools. In most cases, they can be replaced with a regular tool, as mentioned in the text of this chapter:

• Universal valve spring compressor - for removing valves.
• Electric drill with wire brush - for removing carbon deposits from the valve surfaces of the combustion chambers.
• A device for grinding valves to seats.
• Valve seat grinding tool - for restoring the seat surface in case of severe burning.
• Set of mandrels of different sizes - for installing seals (pipe cuttings or socket wrench heads of the appropriate diameter will do).
• A device (mandrel) for compressing piston rings - for installing pistons into cylinders.
• A twelve-sided spline key ("star") of size 10 mm or 12 mm - for loosening and tightening the cylinder head bolts.
