Engine — first start after overhaul (VW Lt 28)

1. In the case of the latest models, the engine will most likely start immediately after the starter is engaged. On early models with a mechanical fuel pump, it may take several turns of the starter to get fuel into the carburetor float chamber.

2. If the engine does not start, you should check the following:

• Is there fuel in the tank?.
• Are the ignition wires and battery wires connected correctly and securely?.
• Is the choke adjusted correctly?.
• If checking all of the above does not reveal the problem, you should carefully read the troubleshooting. given at the end of this chapter.

3. After the engine starts, bring it to normal operating temperature and check the tightness of all bolts and nuts (especially cylinder head bolts). The bolts should be loosened slightly first and then tightened again to the required torque.

4. Adjust idle speed and mixture composition using quantity and quality screws (see chapter 3).

5. Inspect the engine for oil and coolant leaks. After the engine has been turned off and cooled down, check the coolant level and the oil level in the pan and add coolant or oil if necessary.

6. Check the ignition timing (see chapter 4).

7. After the first 1000 km of mileage, check the valve clearances and the tension of the alternator drive belt.

8. After replacing any important internal engine parts, it is extremely important not to overload the engine during the first few hundred kilometers and not to increase the engine speed too much.
