1. The tension of the water pump and generator drive belt should be checked periodically. When pressing the belt with your thumb at the midpoint of its longest run, the belt deflection should be 12.5 mm.

2. If the belt is not tight enough, loosen the generator pivot bolt and the nut and screw at the ends of the generator adjusting rod. Carefully turn the generator away from the engine to tighten the belt and re-tighten the nut and screw on the adjusting rod.

3. Check the belt tension.

4. Inspect the belt for wear, cuts and greasiness, indicating slippage. If there are any defects, replace the belt as follows.

5. Loosen the bolts and nuts securing the generator and its adjusting rod and move the generator all the way towards the engine.

6. Remove the drive belt from the pulleys and pass it over the fan impeller located on the crankshaft.

7. Install the new belt and tension it as described above. Start the engine, let it run for 5-10 minutes, check the belt tension again and adjust it if necessary.

8. Check the belt tension again after the first 1000 km of driving.
