1. Disconnect the battery.
2. Remove the steering wheel as described in Chapter 11.
3. Remove the steering column switches as described in previous Section.
4. Lift the upper steering column cover up and remove it.
5. On early models (manufactured before October 1976) remove the locking plate using pliers.
6. Remove the Phillips head screw that secures the center section of the shroud to the steering knuckle lock and remove the shroud.
7. I remove the lower section of the casing, overcoming the tension of its retaining clamp.
8. Drill out the clear head bolt that secures the column lock. If you drill out this bolt without the use of a special tool, then there should be no difficulty in removing it.
9. Disconnect the ignition switch wiring and remove the ignition switch/key.
10. Installation is carried out by performing the above steps in reverse order. Use a new bolt with a clear head, but do not tighten it fully until the gap between the top edge of the upper cover section and the bottom edge of the steering wheel hub is adjusted to 2.0 to 3.0 mm. Achieve this by adjusting the position of the lock. Check that the lock functions properly, then tighten the bolt until the head falls off.
