Caution: Removing and installing the timing belt for a 1.4 l 55/74 kW petrol engine (75/100 hp) are not described. Only the most important installation instructions are given here.

Fixing the camshaft gears in the TDC position

Fixing the camshaft gears in the TDC position

Turn the engine crankshaft to the TDC ignition position for cylinder 1.

Insert the VW-T10016 locking tool with two locking pins through the locking holes in the camshaft gears until they stop in the installation holes in the camshaft housing. Both locking pins are inserted correctly when the tips of the tips -D-line up with line "A".

Move bracket "B" until it stops against gear "C" of the intake camshaft.

Installing the Timing Belt Tension Roller

Installing the Timing Belt Tension Roller

Turn the tension roller of the connecting toothed belt by the internal hexagon "1" clockwise in the direction of the inspection window "arrow". In this case, the tension of the toothed belt decreases. 2 - protrusion on the carrier plate.

Place the tension roller and press upwards together with the toothed belt. Screw in the fastening bolt.

Tighten the bolt by hand. The protrusion on the carrier plate "2" must enter the hole in the cylinder head.

Tighten the toothed belt. To do this, turn the tension roller counterclockwise by the internal hexagon "1" until the pointer "2" in the viewing window is located above the protrusion on the carrier plate "arrow". In this position, tighten the fastening bolt "3" with a torque of 20 Nm.

Main Timing Belt Tension

Main Timing Belt Tension

If the main timing belt tension roller has been removed, it must be turned counterclockwise by the internal hexagon "arrow" to the position shown in the figure.

Tighten the mounting bolt "2" by hand. The head of the bolt "2" must be located in the cutout of the carrier plate -1-.

Using an Allen key, turn the tension roller in the direction of the left arrow until the pointer "3" is above the cutout in the carrier plate -right arrow-.

Tighten the tension roller mounting bolt to a torque of 20 Nm.

Remove the locking pin from the camshaft gears.

Turn the crankshaft two revolutions and then check the position of the tension roller.
