Attention: Removal and installation of a toothed belt for a gasoline engine with a displacement of 1.4 liters with a power of 55/74 kW (75/100 hp) are not described. Only the most important installation instructions are given here.
Fixing the camshaft gears in the TDC position
Turn the engine crankshaft to the ignition TDC position for cylinder 1.
Insert the VW-T10016 retainer with two locking pins through the fixing holes in the camshaft gears until it stops into the mounting holes on the camshaft housing. Both locking pins are inserted correctly if the tops of the tips -D- coincide with the line -A-.
Push bracket -B- up to the stop on the gear wheel -C- of the intake camshaft.

Installation of a tension roller of a connecting toothed belt
Turn the tensioning pulley of the connecting toothed belt at the hexagon socket -1- clockwise in the direction of the viewing window -arrow-. This reduces the tension of the toothed belt. 2 - protrusion on the carrier board.
Attach the tension roller and press upwards together with the toothed belt. Screw in the mounting bolt.
Tighten the bolt by hand. The lug on the bearing plate -2- must fit into the hole in the cylinder head.
Pull on toothed belt. To do this, turn the tensioning pulley counterclockwise at the hexagon socket -1- until the pointer -2- in the inspection window is above the projection on the carrier plate -arrow-. In this position, tighten the securing bolt -3- to 20 Nm.
Main toothed belt tension
If the main toothed belt tensioner has been removed, it must be turned counterclockwise by the hexagon socket -arrow- to the position shown in the figure.
Tighten securing bolt -2- by hand. The head of the bolt -2- must be positioned in the cutout of the support plate -1-.
Using an Allen key, turn the tensioning roller in the direction of the left arrow until the pointer -3- is above the cutout in the carrier plate -right arrow-.
Tighten the tensioning roller bolt to 20 Nm.
Remove the retainer from the camshaft gears.
Turn the crankshaft two turns and then check the position of the tensioner roller.
Location of toothed belts
