Checking the coolant level (VW Passat B6)

Sufficient coolant level is an important condition for the normal operation of the engine cooling system. Therefore, the coolant level should be checked regularly.

The coolant level can only be checked correctly when the engine is off.



To check the coolant level, there is no need to remove the expansion tank – it is transparent (Fig. 1.73).

The coolant level when the engine is cold should be between the "Min" and "Max" marks; when the engine is warm, the level may be slightly above the "Max" mark.

Topping up the coolant

Top up with new coolant only.

Caution: Do not open the expansion tank cap when the engine is hot – you may get burned (Fig. 1.74).

First, turn off the engine and let it cool down. Then cover the expansion tank cap with a rag and carefully unscrew it counterclockwise. Use only new coolant to top up.

If there is no coolant based on low-temperature concentrate G12 under the circumstances, do not add coolant based on another concentrate to the system. In this case, only water can be added; at the first opportunity, it is necessary to restore the required composition of the coolant by adding the recommended low-temperature concentrate.
