Measuring wear of timing belts on diesel engines (VW Passat B5)

1. Release the clamps and remove the timing belt cover.

2. Using a caliper, measure the width of the timing belt.

If the width of the toothed belt is more than 22 mm, this indicates that the belt is approaching wear and the need to replace it.
