Remove the gear shift knob and boot.
Loosen the nuts securing the shift and gear selection cables to the gearbox.
Remove the reverse light switch located on the gear selector mechanism.
Loosen the adjusting bolt on the gearshift lever (Fig. 4-49), install the VW 3192 template on the gearshift lever and secure the template with the hook and clamping screw. Install the gearshift lever on the left stop of the template linkage, press the lever all the way to the left and secure the linkage in this position with the locking screw. Install the gearshift lever on the right stop of the template linkage and tighten the adjusting bolt on the gearshift lever.

Install the VW 3192/1 template and key onto the gearshift mechanism of the gearbox without moving the gear selector lever in the vertical direction (Fig. 4-49). In this position, tighten the bolts securing the shift and gear selector cables.
Remove the adjustment templates from the gearshift lever and gearbox. Move the gearshift lever to neutral: the lever should be on the shift line of III and IV gears. Make sure that the gears are shifted and locked correctly, especially the reverse gear. Install the gearshift lever cover and handle.
