Attention: From 10/93 a modified tool is required to remove standard radios.
Removing
Switch off the ignition.
Disconnect ground wire (-) battery.
Attention: When the battery is disconnected, the memory devices (in radio and control units) fault codes are erased accordingly. VW PASSAT cars are fitted as standard with radio receivers with coding for the warning and anti-theft system. The coding of the anti-theft system prevents its unauthorized shutdown in the event of a power failure. A power failure occurs, for example, when the battery is disconnected, when the radio is removed or its fuse blows. If the radio is coded, make sure you have the radio code before disconnecting the battery. If the code is unknown, then only the VW workshop can reconnect the radio.
The individual code number can be found in the radio manual. This code must not be stored in the vehicle.
Radio up to 9/93
Insert both pullers into the holes on the left and right of the front plate. If there are no holes, remove the adjustment knobs and trim.
Pull out the radio evenly, without distortions, while pressing the pullers outwards.
Radio since 10/93
Removal requires two 3316 pullers.
Insert the pullers into the slots until they lock into place.
Pull the radio out of the instrument panel by the puller eyes.
Attention: When removing the radio, the pullers must not be pressed to the side or warped.
Pull out the pullers. To do this, press the side locking tabs on the radio inwards.
Remove the pullers from the removed radio. To do this, press the side locking tabs on the radio inwards.
Disconnect the loudspeaker and antenna plugs and the multi-pin power supply plug.
If the radio is not connected using multiple plug connectors, mark the wires before removing them so as not to mix them up when connecting.
Installation
Connect the electrical connectors on the back of the radio.
Press the radio into the niche of the instrument panel until it is fixed by the retaining springs.
Connect the battery ground wire.
Turn on the radio and check its operation. If a radio with coding for a warning and anti-theft system is installed, then first enter the code.
