The factory-installed radio is equipped with a mount with guides that allow for quick installation and removal of the radio. First of all, this can only be done immediately with a special tool (puller), which is included with the purchase of the radio or which can be purchased at a specialized store. Whether the radio is installed on a mount with guides can usually be determined by four holes on the front panel. If the pullers are not available, four nails with a diameter of 1.5 mm can be inserted into the holes as a replacement.

Please note: Since 10/93, a modified tool is required to remove serially installed radios.

Removal

Turn off the ignition.

Disconnect the battery ground (-) cable.

Caution: When disconnecting the battery, the data stored in the memory devices (in radio and in control units) the fault codes are erased accordingly. VW PASSAT cars are equipped with radio receivers with coded warning and anti-theft systems as standard. Coded anti-theft systems prevent unauthorized disconnection in the event of a power failure. A power failure occurs, for example, when the battery is disconnected, when the radio is removed, or when its fuse burns out. If the radio is coded, you should make sure that you have the radio code before disconnecting the battery. If the code is unknown, only a VW workshop can reconnect the radio.

The individual code number is provided in the radio's operating manual. This code should not be stored in the vehicle.

Insert both pullers into the holes on the left and right of the front panel. If there are no holes, remove the adjustment handles and trim.

Remove the radio evenly, without distorting it, while simultaneously pressing the pullers outward.

Insert the pullers into the slots until they lock into place.

Pull the radio out of the instrument panel using the puller lugs.

Attention: When removing the radio, the pullers should not be pressed to the side or skewed.

Pull out the pullers. To do this, press the side locking tabs on the radio inward.

Remove the pullers from the removed radio. To do this, press the side locking tabs on the radio inward.

Disconnect the speaker and antenna plugs and the multi-pin power plug.

If the radio is not connected using multi-pin plug connectors, mark the wires before removing them so as not to mix them up when connecting.

Installation

Connect the electrical connectors to the back of the radio.

Press the radio into the dashboard recess until it is secured with the retaining springs.

Connect the battery ground cable.

Turn on the radio and check its operation. If the radio is equipped with a coded warning and anti-theft system, enter the code first.
