Removal and installation of the radio receiver
Factory-installed radios are equipped with a case that allows you to quickly install and remove it. However, this is only possible with the help of a special tool that comes with the radio when you buy it or is commercially available. The fact that the radio is in a case, as a rule, can be determined by 4 holes on the front panel.
Removing
1. Switch off the ignition.
2. Disconnect ground cable (-) from the battery.
Attention! When the battery is disconnected, the memory of the radio receiver and electronic control units is erased. VW manufactures serial production of radios equipped with an anti-theft code. It prevents unwanted activation of the device after the circuit has been disconnected. Disconnection of the circuit can, for example, occur after disconnecting the battery, removing the radio, or blowing the fuse in the radio. If the radio is coded, write down the code before disconnecting the battery. If the code is unknown, then the radio receiver can only be put into operation at a workshop.
Attention! The individual code number is given in the instruction manual for the radio receiver. The code cannot be stored in the machine.
3. Insert two removable devices (A) right and left through the holes in the front panel. If there are no holes, remove the control buttons and shield. Insert removable accessories.
Attention! If there are no removable devices at hand, insert 4 studs 1.5 mm and about 30 mm long into the holes instead of them and thus free the case.
4. Remove the radio without twisting.
5. Mark the speaker plug connections with adhesive tape (right left) and take off. Take out the antenna. Disconnect the multi-pin plug.
6. Remove the removable attachments by squeezing the retaining clips with a small screwdriver.
Installation
1. Connect the electrical wires and antenna to the back of the radio.
2. Insert the radio receiver into the instrument panel until it clicks.
3. Connect ground cable () to the battery.
Attention! Connect the battery only with the ignition off, otherwise the injection system control unit will fail.
4. Set clock time.
5. Enter anti-theft radio code.
6. Turn on the radio and check operation. If the radio has an anti-theft code, enter it first.
Notes for an optional radio
The standard multi-pin plug fits all VW radios from model year 1988. The plug has the following cable color codes:
- red is a permanent plus;
- brown - minus (machine weight);
- grey/blue – scale illumination;
- brown red - control drive for turning the ignition switch on and off (special equipment). Never connect battery voltage to this drive;
- blue/white - speed signal for automatic volume control (special equipment).
For other radios, a VW adapter is available.
Attention! If a cable with an adapter is not used, then be sure to pay attention to good insulation of bare wires. Otherwise, a short circuit and ignition of the cable winding may occur.
Ensure that only approved generic radio interference suppressors are used (general operating permit, ABE). Otherwise, the approval of the machine for operation becomes invalid. Radio interference suppressors specially designed for VW are available for sale with installation instructions.
Attention! If the radio is to be installed optionally, adjust the radio antenna. To do this, catch a weak medium wave radio station. Then, with a small screwdriver, tune in to its best reception using a tuned screw (front right on the radio panel).
