Rear Seat Side Armrests — Removal and Installation (Golf) (VW Golf 5)

Removal

1. Armrests with side airbag. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal first, then the positive (+) battery terminal to avoid possible airbag deployment on the pillar. Wrap the negative battery terminal with insulating tape.

2. Remove the rear seat.

3. Unscrew nut 1 and fold the rear seat back forward (see illustration).

4. Armrests with side airbag. Remove the cover and unscrew the bolt 2 (see illustration 35.3).

5. Remove the side armrest 5 by pushing it upwards and releasing it from the fasteners 3 and 4 (see illustration 35.3).

Caution! Before disconnecting the side airbag connector, remove any static electricity by touching the vehicle body. Always follow the safety precautions for airbags.

6. Armrests with side airbag. Disconnect the side airbag connector.

Installation

The armrests are installed in the reverse order of removal. The bolt and nut are tightened with a force of 8 Nm.

Warning! Armrests with side airbag. No one should be in the car when connecting the battery.

7. Armrests with side airbag. Remove the insulating tape from the negative battery terminal and connect the positive potential (+) wire terminal first, and only then the ground (-) wire terminal.

If after turning on the ignition the signal lamp on the instrument panel does not go out after some time, then this is evidence of a malfunction of the airbag system. In this case, it is recommended to contact the workshop.
