The front brakes on all models are disc type. Calipers can be one of several types: VW, Teves, or Girling; they can be distinguished by the manufacturer's name cast on the caliper body. On models with a fuel injection system, ventilated brake discs are installed, on all other models they are solid.
Rear brake mechanisms - drum type, single-cylinder, with manual adjustment of the brake pads. During operation, it is necessary to periodically adjust the rear brakes; for this, there is a special hole in the brake shield, closed with a plug
Since September 1978, rear brakes have been installed with an automatic VW wedge-type adjuster. In this case, the brake pads adjust automatically when the brake pedal is pressed. The adjuster wedge compensates for the wear of the lining material as the brake pads move towards the drum, taking up excess clearance, and periodic manual adjustment of the brakes is not required.
The hand brake acts on the rear brake pads via a cable drive with a separate cable for each wheel.
Handbrake adjustment is not required under normal conditions, this is done automatically by adjusting the rear brake pads.
The adjustment procedure is described in detail in chapter "Vehicle maintenance work".
On all models (except 11 l) vacuum brake booster installed. The brake booster is located on the left side of the bulkhead of the engine compartment in front of the master brake cylinder and is controlled by a pushrod connected to the brake pedal.
Some models are equipped with a rear brake pressure regulator that changes the pressure in the rear brake system depending on the load. This regulator is included in the hydraulic circuits of the rear brakes and is mounted on the bottom of the car. The regulator is actuated through a spring and linkage from the rear axle beam.
Warning: Brake pad material contains asbestos. During the operation of the brakes, asbestos dust accumulates around them. When working on or cleaning brake parts, do not allow dust to rise into the air - inhaling asbestos dust is hazardous to health. If dust gets on your skin, wash it off immediately.
