The front brakes on all models are disc brakes. The calipers can be one of several types: VW, Teves or Girling; they can be distinguished by the manufacturer's name cast on the caliper body. Models with a fuel injection system have ventilated brake discs, while all other models have solid ones.
Rear brakes are drum type, single-cylinder, with manual adjustment of brake shoes. During operation, it is necessary to periodically adjust the rear brakes, for this purpose there is a special hole in the brake shield, closed with a plug
Since September 1978, rear brakes with automatic VW wedge type adjuster have been installed. In this case, the brake shoes are adjusted automatically when the brake pedal is pressed. The wedge adjuster compensates for the wear of the lining material when the brake shoes move in the direction of the drum, taking up the excess clearance, and periodic manual adjustment of the brakes is not required.
The handbrake acts on the rear brake shoes via a cable drive with a separate cable for each wheel.
Under normal conditions, the handbrake does not require adjustment; this is done automatically by adjusting the rear brake shoes.

The adjustment procedure is described in detail in the chapter "Car maintenance work".
On all models (except 11 l) a vacuum brake booster is installed. The brake booster is located on the left side of the engine compartment bulkhead in front of the master brake cylinder and is controlled by a pushrod connected to the brake pedal.
Some models are equipped with a rear brake pressure regulator, which changes the pressure in the rear brake system depending on the load. This regulator is included in the hydraulic circuits of the rear brakes and is mounted on the bottom of the car. The regulator is actuated by a spring and a lever mechanism from the rear axle beam.
Warning: Brake pad material contains asbestos. Asbestos dust accumulates around the brakes when the brakes are in use. When handling or cleaning brake parts, do not allow dust to become airborne - inhaling asbestos dust is hazardous to health. If dust gets on your skin, wash it off immediately.
