Warning: Insufficient or excessive oil level will disrupt the normal operation of the gearbox. Therefore, the oil level should be checked regularly.
Checking the gearbox oil level (VW Passat B4)
Place the vehicle on a level, horizontal surface. Apply the parking brake. Set the selector lever to position "P". Start the engine at idle speed, remove the gearbox dipstick and note the oil level. When the engine is not warmed up, the oil level should be at the "20°C" mark. Let the engine run for about 10 minutes to warm up the gearbox to a normal operating temperature of about 60°C, then check the oil level again, which should be at the 60°C mark. If necessary, top up the oil to the norm.
