Warm up the engine until the expansion tank feels warm to the touch.
Open expansion tank cap carefully.
Attention: Do not open the cover when the engine is hot, see «Checking the coolant level».
Suck in the coolant with a densimeter and determine its density by the position of the float. In our latitudes, the concentration of antifreeze should prevent freezing of the coolant to at least -25°C.
Adding VAG antifreeze
For freeze protection down to -25°C, the coolant must contain 40% antifreeze. If the coolant, without freezing, must withstand temperatures down to -35°C, then the ratio of antifreeze and water should be 1: 1. Use only original VAG antifreeze brand G-011-VBC. The table below shows how much antifreeze must be added to achieve a favorable antifreeze to water ratio.
Example: Measurement of the concentration of antifreeze in the cooling system of a 4-cylinder engine showed that the coolant is guaranteed from freezing down to a temperature of -5°C. In this case, 3 liters of coolant must be drained from the cooling system and 3 liters of pure antifreeze must be poured into the system. As a result, the coolant will not freeze down to -25°C. To keep the fluid from freezing down to -35°C, it is necessary to replace 3.5 liters of coolant with clean antifreeze.
Close the cap on the expansion tank and, after a test drive, recheck the concentration of antifreeze in the coolant.
