Removing
Attention: Disconnect the ground wire (-) battery, otherwise there is a danger of a short circuit.
Support the power unit using the VW 10-222A tool in conjunction with the VW 10-222/1 A tool.
If there is no supporting device, throw a suitable pipe or tee over the engine compartment and support it on the depressed wing belts, placing wooden spacers on the wings. Do not rest the pipe directly on the wings! Insert suitable wire or hooks into the lifting eyes of the power unit and tie to the pipe. Pull hooks or wire. It is also possible, by placing a wooden pad, to support the power unit from below using a hydraulic jack.
Attention: If the power unit is not supported, it will sink down, which will not allow you to insert the starter back.
Snack with side cutters two clamps (arrows) securing the wire from the alternator and the terminal 50 wire from the ignition switch and starter. Depending on the model, the traction relay may be equipped with a plastic cover; in this case, remove the cover and unfasten the wire.
Unfasten and remove the plug (arrow). For models up to 9/93, disconnect 2 plugs (White and black). Unscrew the thick wire from terminal 30 of the starter (arrow). For models up to 9/93, an additional thin wire from the generator B + connector goes to terminal 30 of the generator - remove this wire as well.
Models from 10/93: unscrew the nut (arrow) from the stud for the wire holder.
Loosen the starter mounting bolts and pull the starter up.
Installation
Attach the starter and tighten the mounting bolts to a torque of 60 Nm.
Screw the electrical wires to the starter and alternator. Tighten the starter nut to 13 Nm.
Connect white and black plugs.
Alternator wire and starter wire, terminal 50, fasten to the traction turnbuckle with two clamps or fasten in a plastic holder.
Remove support device.
Connect the battery ground wire.
