Some vehicles are equipped with starters with the following power: with a 1.6 liter engine - 0.9 kW; with 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines, as well as a diesel engine - 1.1 kW; with a turbocharged diesel engine - 1.7 kW.
Removal
Caution: Disconnect the battery ground (-) cable, otherwise there is a risk of short circuit.

Support the power unit using the VW 10-222A device in conjunction with the VW 10-222/1 A device.
If there is no supporting device, throw a suitable pipe or T-bar over the engine compartment and rest it on the pressed-in wing bands, placing wooden spacers on the wings. Do not rest the pipe directly on the wings! Insert suitable wire or hooks into the lifting eyes of the power unit and tie it to the pipe. Tighten the hooks or wire. You can also, placing a wooden spacer, support the power unit from below using a hydraulic jack.
Caution: If the power unit is not supported, it will sag downwards, preventing the starter from being reinserted.

Use side cutters to cut the two clamps (arrows) securing the wire from the alternator and the wire of terminal 50 from the ignition switch and starter. Depending on the model, the traction relay may be equipped with a plastic cover, in which case remove the cover and unfasten the wire.

Unfasten and remove the connector block (arrow). For models up to 9/93, disconnect 2 connectors (white and black). Unscrew the thick wire (arrow) from terminal 30 of the starter. In models up to 9/93, an additional thin wire from the B+ connector of the generator goes to terminal 30 of the generator - remove this wire as well.

Models from 10/93: Unscrew the nut (arrow) from the wire holder stud.
