Removing
Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal.
Remove gearbox.
Lock the flywheel with a latch.
Gradually loosen the bolts securing the clutch cover to the flywheel.
Remove clutch cover assembly with pressure plate. This releases the clutch disc.
Installation
Thoroughly clean the clutch parts and visually check the condition of the rivets and the fastening of the driven plate vibration damper springs. Check the condition and runout of the working surface of the friction linings. Check the condition of the contact surface of the driven disk on the flywheel. Check the thickness of the driven disk and friction linings. Check the flatness of the working surface of the pressure plate. Check the condition of the gearbox input shaft bearing in the crankshaft flange.
Replace defective parts.
Install the driven disc with the protruding part of the hub towards the pressure plate and center the driven disc using the VW mandrel 10213 (see picture).
Install the clutch cover and tighten the bolts securing to the flywheel.
Tighten alternately the bolts securing the clutch cover to the flywheel to a torque of 2.5 kgf·m. Remove the flywheel retainer.
Lubricate the splines of the gearbox input shaft with a thin coat of grease.
