The generator shaft is driven by a V-belt from the engine crankshaft. All generators have a voltage regulator under the rear cover. One of the control lamps located on the instrument panel informs about the correct functioning of electrical equipment and battery charging. This section discusses the repair of components and assemblies, the description of which was not included in sections 3, 4, 5.
Before you start working with electrical equipment, you should familiarize yourself with the recommendations that should be strictly observed:
- It is unacceptable to disconnect the battery or voltage regulator when the engine and generator are running.
- Can't close to «mass» wire coming out of the generator field winding terminal.
- Do not interchange the wires of the voltage regulator.
- Do not start the engine when the voltage regulator is connected to «weight».
- Do not remove the alternator without first disconnecting the battery.
- When installing the battery, observe the polarity of its connection.
- If the battery is to be charged from an external power source without being removed from the vehicle, both battery terminals should be disconnected.
Incorrect connection of the battery poles will cause damage to the rectifier elements of the generator or voltage regulator.
While driving, the charging indicator lamp should go out. If this does not happen, then this means damage to the generator or voltage regulator. First you should check all the electrical contacts of the generator, as well as the tension of its V-belt.
