Radiator fan and thermal switch (VW Golf 1)

To check the operation of the radiator fan, disconnect the wire connector from the thermal switch, install a short jumper between the wires and turn on the ignition - the fan should start working

The fan and its casing can be removed without removing the radiator from the vehicle. Before removing the fan, disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

The fan motor is attached to the casing with three nuts and is removed quite easily.

The fan motor cannot be disassembled, but the fan impeller can be removed by unscrewing the bolt on the impeller hub and carefully pushing the impeller off the motor shaft.

The fan is installed in reverse order.

To replace the thermal switch that controls the fan, drain the cooling system, disconnect the wire connector, and carefully unscrew the thermal switch from the radiator tank. On 1.1 and 1.3 liter engines, the thermal switch is located in the right radiator tank, and on larger engines, in the left tank.

When unscrewing the thermal switch, be careful not to damage the radiator. Always use a new gasket when installing.

Please note that since August 1978, thermal switches with a higher operating temperature have been installed than on previous engines.
