NOTE: Removal and installation of camshafts is only possible with the engine and cylinder head removed.
Work order
Drive the crankshaft with the vibration damper fixing bolt in the direction of engine rotation to the TDC cyl. 1.
Remove the intake manifold and cylinder head cover. Remove the thermostat housing. Remove the timing chain tensioner.
Unscrew the camshaft cover. Mark the running direction of the roller chains before removal (e.g. paint an arrow indicating the direction of the chain) (pic. 2.72).
NOTE: Do not score with a center punch or similar tool.
First, remove the exhaust camshaft shift clutch.
Keep the camshaft in a fixed position only with a fork wrench 32. When tightening or loosening the phase shifters, the ruler for camshafts T10068 A must not be inserted into the grooves.
Remove the camshaft shifter clutch with the timing roller chain from the intake shaft.
Set the timing chain aside by laying it sideways.
Unscrew the regulator housing from the cylinder head (pic. 2.73).
Carefully remove the timing cover from the camshaft lip seals.
Intake camshaft
Remove bearing caps 1 and 13 first.
Then remove bearing caps 3 and 11.
Remove bearing cover 7.
Loosen and remove bearing caps 5 and 9, alternating crosswise (pic. 2.74).
Exhaust camshaft
Remove bearing caps 2 and 14 first.
Then remove bearing caps 4 and 12.
Remove bearing cover 8.
Loosen and remove the covers of supports 6 and 10, alternating crosswise (pic. 2.74).
Carefully remove the camshafts and place them on a clean pad.
Remove the roller arms together with the supports and set them aside on a clean pad.
Do not interchange roller arms and bearings.
