Removal and installation a turbocharger (VW Caddy 3)

If mechanical defects are found on the turbocharger, such as a defective impeller, it is not enough to simply replace the turbocharger. To avoid the occurrence of subsequent defects, the following work must be carried out.
  • Check the air filter housing, filter element and inlet hoses for contamination.
  • Check the entire charge air supply unit and charge air cooler for foreign objects.

If any are detected, clean the entire charge air supply path and replace the cooler if necessary.

Removal



1. Remove the engine noise-insulating cover.

2. Remove the exhaust pipe with the diesel particulate filter.

3. Unscrew the fastening of the oil supply line (arrow) on the turbocharger.

4. Disconnect the air duct from the air filter and from the turbocharger.

5. Unscrew (if available) fastenings (A) of the auxiliary heater cooling system pipelines.

6. Unscrew the bolts (arrows) and remove the connecting pipe of the exhaust gas recirculation system.

7. Unscrew the exhaust gas temperature sensor (G235) (arrows) from the hole in the turbocharger.

8. Unscrew the bolts (1) securing the support flange to the turbocharger and the bolt (2).

9. Unscrew the hollow bolt (3) and remove the turbocharger support containing the oil drain pipe.

10. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the turbocharger vacuum chamber.


11. Unscrew the heat shield fastening above the exhaust manifold (arrow).

Caution! To remove the exhaust manifold through the tunnel in the underbody area, the heat shield (1) must be removed.

12. Unscrew the plate nut (2) from the stud (3).

13. Unscrew the exhaust manifold mounting screws (arrows).

14. Turn the turbocharger with the exhaust manifold so that the latter can be removed downwards through the tunnel in the underbody.

Installation is carried out in reverse order.
