Removing
Remove the suspension strut, see the relevant chapter above.
Caution: To remove the shock absorber, the coil spring must be compressed with a suitable spring compressor.
Caution: Never let go of the shock absorber mount unless the coil spring is securely compressed.
Compress the coil spring with a suitable spring compressor. The figure shows a VW spring compressor. It is also fashionable to use the HAZET 4900-2A tool with the HAZET 4900-11 receivers.
Attention: Make sure that the receivers of the device securely surround the coils of the spring and cannot slip off. The coiled spring is compressed with great force, so use only a serviceable tool. Never tie up the spring with wire. Danger of accident!
Attention: Loosen the upper nut only after the spring is securely compressed.
Holding the shock absorber piston rod with a wrench -2- with an external hexagon of 7 mm, for example, HAZET 2593-1, unscrew the nut on the side of the support cup with a replaceable HAZET 2593-21 socket head, 1 - handle with a ratchet or a torque wrench, respectively, 3 - shock absorber support racks.
Make sure that the coil spring is in the correct position in the receivers of the compression device, eg VAG 1752/4 -arrow-.
Attention: If the spring is to be replaced, it must be released slowly. If the shock absorber is replaced, do not release the spring and remove it together with the compression device and individual parts.
Check shock absorber, see p. 112.
Dispose of shock absorber if necessary.
Installation
Attention: Coil springs can be with different tolerances. On one bridge, install only springs with the same color marking and from the same manufacturer.
Note: The new coil spring is protected against corrosion with clear varnish. The outer surface must not be damaged.
shock absorber check.
Put a restrictive buffer and a corrugated cover on the shock absorber.
Put the compressed coil spring together with the compression device on the lower plate of the shock absorber.
The end of the spring coil must rest against the stop -arrow-.
Install the thrust bearing and suspension strut support onto the spring.
Screw a new self-locking nut onto the shock absorber piston rod and tighten to 60 Nm.
Release the spring slowly.
Install shock absorber see relevant chapter.
