Checking the cooling system for leaks (VW Passat B6)

Verification procedure

Open the cap of the expansion tank of the cooling system.

Warning: When opening the expansion tank, hot steam may escape. To avoid eye injury and scalding, wear protective glasses and special clothing. Cover the tank lid with a rag and carefully open it.

Place the cooling system tester with adapter on the expansion tank (fig. 2.184).

Using the hand tester pump, create an excess pressure of approximately 1.0 bar.

If the pressure drops, find the leak and fix it.

Checking the pressure reducing valve in the expansion tank cap

Place the cooling system tester with adapter on the expansion tank cap (fig. 2.185).

Activate the hand pump.

The pressure reducing valve should open at an excess pressure of 1.4 to 1.6 bar.
