1 - Nameplate with vehicle model designation
The manufacturer's plate with the designation of the vehicle model is fixed on the right glass of the suspension strut.
2 - Vehicle identification number
Vehicle identification number (chassis number) embossed on the rear bulkhead of the engine compartment.
The chassis number is decoded as follows:

- 1 - Manufacturer code: VWV = Volkswagen.
- 2 - Complete set.
- 3 - Two-digit type code. B = Passat.
- 4 - Detailed equipment.
- 5 - Year of manufacture: W = 1998, X = 1999, etc.
- 6 - Place of manufacture.
- 7 - Chassis number.
3 - Engine number
On 4-cylinder engines, the number is located on the left side of the cylinder block, below the split line between the block and the head.
On 5- and 6-cylinder engines, the number is located on the right side of the cylinder block, below the split line between the block and the block head. To find the number on 5- and 6-cylinder engines, unscrew the engine cover fastener.
Additionally, the engine number is printed on a barcode sticker on the timing belt cover.
Vehicle data plate
The vehicle data plate is affixed either to the spare wheel well or to the luggage compartment floor.
The plate contains the following data.
- 1 - Intrafactory item number.
- 2 - Vehicle identification number.
- 3 - Car model code.
- 4 - Detailed model designation/Engine power.
- 5 - Letter designation of engine and gearbox models.
- 6 - Paint number / interior equipment code.
- 7 - Custom equipment code.
