Features of the front wheel drive device (VW Passat B4)

The front drive wheels are driven by two shafts. Each shaft has two Rzeppa constant velocity ball joints, one of which is sliding, and an anti-vibration weight. Since August 1989, a one-piece anti-vibration weight has been installed instead of a two-piece weight (Fig. 4-79).



Distance between the outer edge of the load and the outer mating surface of the outer hinge, mm:

• on the right wheel drive shaft: 521.0;
• on the left wheel drive shaft: 264.5.

On Passat cars manufactured in 1995-96 with 4-cylinder engines and hydromechanical gearboxes, constant velocity roller joints are used in the front wheel drive, in which, instead of six balls, three rollers are installed in the cage, located at 120° intervals around the circumference (Fig. 4-80). Joints of this type are repairable.
