Setting the ignition timing using a stroboscope (VW Passat B4)

Start and warm up the engine to normal operating temperature (oil temperature not less than 60°C), then stop it. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the distributor sensor.

Connect the stroboscope and control tachometer to the ignition system according to the operating instructions. Loosen the tightening of the distributor sensor bracket bolt.

Start the engine and set it to idle speed.

Remove the clutch housing hatch cover and direct the stroboscope light beam through the opening in the housing onto the flywheel. Rotate the distributor sensor housing until the marks on the flywheel and clutch housing are aligned.

Warning: To view the fixed timing mark, you must lean over the clutch housing.

Tighten the distributor sensor mounting bracket bolt, check the ignition timing again and repeat the adjustment if necessary.
