Checking the density of the coolant in the expansion tank
Warning: Never open the engine hood when you see steam or coolant escaping from the engine compartment - risk of burns! Wait until no more steam comes out or no more coolant flows.
The expansion tank of the engine cooling system is located in the engine compartment.
The coolant level can only be correctly checked when the engine is off.
When the engine is cold, the coolant level should be between the min and max marks on the expansion tank; when the engine is warm, the level may also be slightly above the max mark (see fig. Checking the coolant level in the expansion tank).
A coolant hydrometer must be used to check the density (see fig. Checking the density of the coolant in the expansion tank).
