Adjusting the gap between the breaker contacts and the angle of their closed state (VW Beetle)

If there is no device for measuring the angle of the closed state of the contacts, then the adjustment can be made with satisfactory accuracy using a measuring probe.

Remove the distributor cap and its rotor.

Turn the crankshaft by the alternator drive belt until the distributor shaft cam fully lifts the breaker hammer lever (the cam and the plastic slider of the breaker lever must touch at the highest point).

Measure the gap between the contacts using a feeler gauge. It should be 0.4 mm. When the gap is adjusted correctly, the feeler gauge should slide between the contacts with slight friction. The gap between contacts with burn marks can only be measured from the edge, otherwise incorrect data may be obtained.

If the gap is too large or too small, slightly loosen the mounting bolt (item "a" in photo 74/693). Using a screwdriver, move the breaker contact until the measuring probe fits snugly between the contacts. In this case, the plastic slider of the breaker must rest on the cam of the distributor shaft.

Tighten the mounting bolt "a".

Turn the crankshaft (and therefore the distributor shaft) so that the breaker lever is fully raised. Check the gap between the contacts again using a feeler gauge and adjust if necessary.

Install the rotor and cover onto the distributor. Adjust the ignition timing.

Caution! There must be no oil or grease between the contacts. Otherwise, the engine will not start.
