Elements of the brake cylinder: 1 - dust cap; 2 - valve for air release; 3 - spring; 4 - body of the wheel brake cylinder; 5 - cuff (lubricate with VW brake cylinder paste); 6 - piston (lubricate with VW brake cylinder paste); 7 - protective cap
Attention! When repairing, install the repair kit in the kit.
Removing
Remove brake drum.
Remove brake pads (see section "Removal and installation of front brake pads" or "Removal and installation of rear brake pads").
Disconnect the brake hose from the wheel brake cylinder and close it with a dust cap from the bleeder valve.
Attention! The hose must not be contaminated!
Loosen the bolts of the wheel brake cylinder, remove the cylinder.
Disassembly and assembly
The wheel brake cylinder can be disassembled in the installed position. Disassembly of the cylinder is necessary if the cuffs are worn out or its piston is jammed. The cylinder must be replaced when it becomes scratched or corroded. It is not allowed to remove traces of damage by grinding. The cylinder must be replaced as a set, and its repair is carried out only in the rarest cases. When repairing, it is imperative to use a repair kit, while paying attention to choosing the correct diameter. There are tolerances for different vehicle variants.
Using a screwdriver, remove the protective cap, remove the piston with cuffs and the expansion spring.
Clean all parts with brake fluid or alcohol. Clean pistons should move in the cylinder with resistance.
Push new cuffs onto the pistons; while the long shoulder should be directed towards the cylinder. Coat seals, pistons and brake cylinder with VW/Audi branded brake cylinder paste.
Clean the opening of the air release valve, replace the valve if necessary.
Push the left piston into the wheel brake cylinder, put on the protective cap.
Insert the spring on the right and slide the right piston, put on the protective cap.
Installation
Install the wheel brake cylinder and secure it.

Install brake pads.
Install the brake drum.
Adjust brakes.
