Disassembling the outer constant velocity joint (VW Passat B5)

The following spare parts are supplied with the joint: protective boots, washers, lubricant, drive shaft nut and spring retaining rings.

Execution order

1. Use a scriber to mark the positions of the hub and the joint housing.



2. Rotate the joint hub in the housing and remove each ball. Store the balls in the order they were removed for subsequent reinstallation in their original positions.

3. Rotate the joint separator so that the two rectangular slots align with the housing, then remove the separator and hub.



4. Turn the hub in the separator so that one of the hub parts enters one of the rectangular slots in the separator, turn the hub and remove it from the separator.



5. Clean all the hinge parts and check their condition. If there are signs of wear or corrosion, replace the hinge.

6. Apply 45 grams to the ball joint housing, then install the separator with the hub into the ball joint housing. Sequentially insert the balls into the hub, and check that the hub in the separator and the housing are installed in the original position (according to previously made marks). Install the new snap ring into the hub, then press the remaining half of the grease (45 grams) into the joint.
